FOREWORD

Microscopical examination of brain tumour specimens at the time of excision is an important and useful diagnostic aid not only for the correct identification of the nature of the tumour involved, but also in reducing the operating time itself, to the obvious benefit of the patient. Smear technique is the most handy and rapid method of tissue examination. Although it provides cytological rather than histological data, a skilled examiner will be able to recognize the type of neoplasia and to deduce some information about its biological behaviour (grading). This obviously depends entirely on his knowledge of clinical neuro-oncology. The present atlas, based on the results of a large series of cases (more than 1,800 tumours), aims to provide such knowledge and does so successfully. A short text, excellent pictures, apt comparisons between smear slides and paraffin section, and brief remarks on differential diagnosis bear witness to the authors's solid professional experience in neurosurgical neuropathology. I am confident that this reliable and stimulating reference book by Andrioli and Rigobello will find its place in the personal library of both neurosurgeons and neuropathologists.
