FROM THE preface

In this book we have set out to differentiate theory from practice and therefore we have only considered those interactions which have been reported and/or studied in man. In addition, we have evaluated the clinical importance of the literature. Single drugs are always to be preferred to multiple drug use unless the combination gives a real therapeutic advantage. Monotherapy is, however, not always possible. Many patients are polysymptomatic and require multiple therapy. Since the object of this present work is to help the physician when he needs to use polypharmacy, we have chosen to deal only with those drug interactions which have been observed in man. The book has been divided into three sections: the first contains general observations on drug interactions; the second deals with different pharmacological interactions, classified according to drug category; and the third section is an appendix containing references to practical and research activities.
