From the preface.

In cosmetic dentistry the major objective is to restore or to improve the esthetic appearance of the patient's teeth. Many different techniques and materials are used to obtain this goal. However, revolutionary improvements in both bonding techniques and porcelain material made the use of porcelain for restorations more and more popular.

Bonding the porcelain restoration to the enamel of the tooth strengthens the tooth as well as the porcelain. Porcelain is a natural-looking, wear-resistant material which can be used instead of gold, acrylic, amalgam or composite restorative materials. Presently porcelain restorations are well accepted within the field of cosmetic dentistry but also in geriatric dentistry these restorations have a promising future.

The indication scope for porcelain restorations is fairly unlimited. Veneers, partial or full coverage crowns and veneer bridges are suitable, other bridges still need porcelain-fused-to-metal constructions. Standardization of preparation techniques and laboratory procedures will bring about a long-lasting esthetically pleasing porcelain restoration. This atlas demonstrates and describes in detail the indications, preparations, laboratory work and esthetic results with all-porcelain veneers, crowns and veneer bridges as well as porcelain-fused-to-metal bridges.

Therefore this atlas is recommended to anyone who is working in the field of prosthetic, cosmetic and geriatric dentistry.
